Drive Business Success with These Culture Characteristics

Retaining employees is near the top of the docket for 2025 for businesses. As we enter a new year full of opportunity, turn your attention to the culture characteristics that could aid your retention efforts, decrease turnover, and guide your business to achieve further success.

Positive Culture: As workplace etiquette shifts to be more casual, a new emphasis is on positive company culture. According to a recent Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll Job Insights survey, 91% of U.S. and 89% of Canadian hiring managers describe their companies’ culture as positive. Companies appear to be investing in their culture, as 45% of U.S. and 35% of Canadian companies had improved culture over the past year at the time of the survey.

Professional Development: Companies are 11% more profitable and twice as likely to retain employees when they invest in development opportunities, according to Gallup. Employees value learning and development opportunities, as evidenced by LinkedIn’s 2024 Workforce Learning Report. “Helping employees develop their careers” jumped to number four on the priority list from number nine in 2023.

Recognition: Employees value recognition, as 82% of Americans say recognition contributes to their happiness at work and 32% believe it improves interactions between them and their colleagues, according to a survey by SurveyMonkey and Bonusly.

Psychological Safety: As workplace well-being declines, managers may need to take a new approach with their employees. Psychological safety creates a work environment where it is safe to take risks and share ideas or opinions without fear of retaliation. The National Safety Council found a correlation between psychological safety and physical safety and recommends managers support mental health, communicate expectations, communicate openly, and encourage learning.

Take a new approach to prioritize a culture that promotes employee retention and job satisfaction.
