Easy Eco-Friendly Actions for Employees to Take at Work

Three bins—blue, red, and yellow—each display a white recycling symbol, set in an office with desks and laptops in the background.

Many professionals are seeking ways to make a positive impact on the environment, even during their workday. Practicing eco-friendly habits at work isn’t just a trend; it’s an achievable shift that can inspire others to do the same.

Workers Worry About the Environment

For many employees, environmental responsibility is a priority, one that may even influence where they choose to work. According to Deloitte, 23% of Gen Z and 22% of millennials say they have researched a company’s environmental impact or policies before taking a job.

The same survey shows 65% of Gen Z and 63% of millennials have felt worried or anxious about the environment in the past month. While most employees aren’t in control of sustainability or environmentally friendly practices at work, small actions can add up to big impacts. Try these eco-friendly habits at work.

Eco-Friendly Habits at Work

  • Use designated recycling or compost bins when available.
  • Pack your lunch in reusable containers and lunch bags instead of using single-use plastic.
  • Use a mug for your coffee and a reusable cup for water instead of disposable cups.
  • Consider keeping a reusable plate and cutlery at the office for potlucks.
  • Reduce paper use or go paperless when possible.
  • Turn off lights when not in use.
  • Put your computer on sleep mode when you step away to conserve energy.
  • Transportation options may be limited in your area, but explore options to carpool, take public transportation, or ride a bike to reduce car emissions.
  • Put a plant on your desk or in your office to help purify the air.
  • Reduce waste by offering unwanted items to coworkers or offering to collect items coworkers would like to donate.

Even one new sustainable habit can spark meaningful change. Challenge yourself to embrace environmentally conscious choices, perhaps inspiring others and creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond your workplace.
