Belonging: The “B” in DEI(B)

A sense of belonging is critical to employees’ feelings of safety and acceptance at work. When employees feel like they belong, their turnover risk is 50% lower, and they have a 56% increase in performance, according to BetterUp.

The Academy to Innovate HR describes belonging as:

“…fostering psychological safety in team situations, where every team member is comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment or retribution. Regardless of how long an employee has been in the company or team, they should feel welcome and needed and receive the same comradery and opportunities as anyone else.”

Everyone can contribute to creating a sense of belonging in the workplace through positive interactions, practicing psychological safety, and appreciating individuals’ differences.

“Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs highlights the importance of belonging as a fundamental human need. Many of us experience this sense of belonging with friends or family, and it’s equally crucial in the workplace. When people feel included, connected, and respected, they can truly thrive and bring their best selves to work. This is the culture we strive to create at Express!” – Angela Russell, Organizational Development and DEI(B) Manager at Express Employment International
